In accordance with its Ten-Year Vision Statement, CUHK offers a wide range of research programmes in different subject areas and encourages all academic staff to undertake consultancy and collaborative projects with industry. CUHK has always adopted a liberal policy on research undertakings that allows breadth and depth. Research activities at CUHK cover dimensions laterally to encompass all subjects that are offered at CUHK, vertically to integrate staff research with teaching, and longitudinally to range from upstream research to midstream development.
The University's research activities are supported by two administrative units. The Research Administration Office (RAO) provides a range of practical services to the University's researchers and assists senior management and the Research Committee to develop, implement and maintain policies that further the University's aspiration to pursue productive research to the highest international standards. The Technology Licensing Office (TLO) is responsible for the management and licensing of intellectual properties of the University as well as sponsored research.
Areas of Excellence
The University Grants Committee (UGC) has provided preferential funding to the local tertiary institutions to conduct research into ten selected Areas of Excellence (AoEs). Four of these AoEs are led by researchers at CUHK:
State Key Laboratories
In 1984 China introduced a State Key Laboratory Scheme to establish state-funded laboratories in selected disciplines to conduct innovative basic and applied research to support its technological and economic development. In view of their strategic significance, these laboratories have only been entrusted to institutions that can produce research of international quality and have the resources and skills to carry out important state research tasks. Two State Key Laboratories have been established at CUHK. The
State Key Laboratory in Oncology in South China, established in 2006, conducts research into the biology and early detection of cancers particularly prevalent in Asian populations, and seeks to develop novel therapeutics for their treatment. The
State Key Laboratory of Agrobiotechnology, established in 2008, studies ways of improving rice yields in China by improving the species of rice grown by Chinese farmers.
Different Research Units of CUHK
Academic departments of the University are actively engaged in research in a wide range of disciplines. The University also has an array of institutes and centres specializing in interdisciplinary research of the highest quality. In addition, smaller research / consultancy units have been set up by individual Faculties and departments. The University has also established a number of joint research units in partnership with external academic institutions to pool resources for the advancement of knowledge in different subject areas. A list of these research units and their profiles can be found in the University Calendar.
